The Annapolis Valley Flying Association and friends have no plans “to just roll over,” despite county council’s decision to close the airport as of Sept. 30.

The association, which consists of hangar owners, business owners, recreational users and mechanics, is launching a ‘Save the Airport Campaign’ in an effort to educate the public about the “importance of preserving small airports” and the economic benefit generated by Kings County’s municipal airport.

As part of its annual Apple Blossom Fly-In, the association hosted an open house May 31. Over 200 people toured the airport, getting up close with over 50 aircraft on the ground and seeing first hand what goes on at the airport.

Nancy Sweeney, who is helping roll out the campaign, said airport users, many who travel to the Valley airport from outside the region, have a significant impact on the local economy.

“When they come here, they are buying gas and meals locally and also stop and do some shopping. It is important to recognize the value of that,” she said.

The airport is also home to a jump school and the Greenwood Flight Centre. The combination of airport users has created a successful business model, which Sweeney says is working well.

“So why get rid of it?” she asked.

Sweeney said Flying Association members do not think it is too late to reverse Kings County’s decision to close the airport.

“We are all for Michelin, but we want (councillors) to understand the real value of this airport, too.”
