An excavator made quick work of demolishing the house at the corner of Starrs Road and Brunswick Street in Yarmouth on Sunday, Dec. 29.
The house at 31 Starrs Rd. has been for sale, on and off, since it was seriously damaged in a fire five years ago.
Most recently, the house was listed in November for $29,000. According to listing information, the house was considered uninhabitable. A sold sign recently appeared on the listing.
Because of a lot consolidation, the house is next door to a property, 33 Starrs Road, that also has frontage on Brunswick Street. Between the house and Brunswick Street is a tiny parcel of public land, on which a bench has been erected.
This marks the latest in what is expected to be a parade of demolitions in the town of Yarmouth. At a recent meeting of the Yarmouth County Solid Waste Management Authoirty, town officials confirmed that there are as many as 25 properties at risk of demolition. The town purchased four properties at its most recent tax sale that are expected to be demolished. Town council has held several in-camera sessions at which property acquisition and sales have been on the agenda.
Earlier in December the town executed an order to demolish 1 Willow St.
