A Somerset couple without electricity for a day and a half is wondering what people used to do to occupy their time before they had power. However, the Whalens are taking the experience in stride.

Fred and Anne Whalen said they lost a couple of trees to Arthur but luckily none hit their house. They lost power at about 9 a.m. on July 5 and were still in the dark just before 7 p.m. July 6.

“They’re telling us we have until 11:30 p.m. before it might come back on,” Anne said. “That’s a long time.”

Luckily, the retired couple has family who has brought them water for the bathroom and a case of bottled water to drink. Anne said they could go stay with family members but, “as long as we have food and water, we’ll be okay.”

Unfortunately, some of the food in their fridge has spoiled but they’re hoping that what they have in the freezer will be salvaged.

Anne, who went with family members yesterday to see the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo performance in Halifax, said the journey to the city took them about three hours on Highway 1 as they had to navigate fallen tree limbs and other debris.

When asked how he was handling the prolonged power outage, Fred, former Kings County warden, said, “We’d like to have a shower. A hot meal would be nice.”

He recalls that the last time a storm close to this magnitude blew through about 10 years ago, he was warden. He recalls the emergency measures centre being activated and comfort centres being established. Anne was cooking for those who had to help with the  Emergency Measures Organization. On that occasion, some people went without power for three days.

“I wonder what they used to do in the old days to occupy themselves without any power,” Fred said.
