Chandler’s is getting a new space for their crematorium and a pay out of $14,300 from the Region of Queens due to botched paperwork.

Chandler’s Funeral Home will soon build their crematorium on this piece of land in the Liverpool Industrial Park.  After being met with opposition to the crematorium being built on their Union Street property, they funeral home chose to have the building off site.

“As a result of the confusion over the development of the crematorium and the fact that we had issued a building permit, Chandler’s had started work there,” says Mayor Chris Clarke about the Region’s mistake.

Chandler’s Funeral Home had been issued building permits to build a crematorium on their Union Street property however an older document was found that had that piece of land designated for parking.

When public meetings were held regarding rezoning the property, the funeral home was met with fierce opposition from residents.  Chandler’s then withdrew their application and cancelled the build.

“The reason we backed down is honestly because of the people, we didn’t want to fight, we live here, we are part of the community,” says Anthony MacDiarmid, owner of Chandler’s Funeral Home.

The company still hoped for a way to move forward with a crematorium on another property and that is now happening.

Plans are going forward to start building on property in the Liverpool Industrial Park.  The sale of the property was approved in a special council meeting on May 6, for 0.65 cents per square foot. The Region says they will not have an exact figure until a land survey is done, however the land is about 20,000 square feet making the cost around $13,000.

The parcel of land is located on the corner of Harley Humphrey Drive and West Street near the call centre.

“We have to progress basically from square one again but at least we have a direction we can follow,” says Kevin Samuels, general manager for Chandler's.

The existing lot will be subdivided, leaving a buffer of trees and vegetation between the proposed site of the crematorium and the other portion of the lot.

“Chandlers’ Funeral Service is a very well respected business in our community.  The Region of Queens Municipal Council and staff are focused on economic development and reducing barriers to business growth,” said Mayor Clarke.

MacDiarmid says they hope to have the crematorium done by November.  Construction will start once paperwork between the Region and Chandler’s is complete.
