Lobster fishermen in all three PEI fishing areas can expect to receive information within the new few days regarding the cost and distribution of tags.
The PEI Fishermen’s Association recently became the first licensed supplier under a new plan by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to get out of the business of issuing tags. The industry association will now be issue tags for all species with the exception of tuna.
Association Executive Director Ian MacPherson said fishermen in Areas 24 (the spring season on the North Shore), 25 (the fall fishery on south shore) and 26A 9the spring fishery on the south shore) will receive a letter before the end of January. It will contain a form fishers will be asked to send back confirming the association as their tag supplier.
MacPherson said they will also be supplying tags to any out-of-province fishers that are fishing in Island waters. He said the association plans to offer bilingual service. “We will continue to update harvester and tag information as it becomes available from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans,” he said.
