Event for aging people, aging dogs on South Shore

Nova Scotia dog lovers are invited to ElderDog Canada’s annual jubilee and butterfly release Aug. 16 in Lunenburg County.

The event runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the organization’s national office, 907 Feltzen South Rd., and is part of a fundraising campaign to build the commemoration site Place to Paws.

ElderDog Canada is active in five provinces and is “dedicated to helping aging people, aging dogs, and the important connection between them.”

Those connections can be challenging when seniors and dogs may be separated because people can no longer care for their pets without help. ElderDog Canada says it is the only group in the country providing free companion animal in-home care for seniors.

“Volunteers provide a wide range of dog care supports from occasional assistance with dog-related appointments to regular dog walking to intensive daily assistance with medical needs,” ElderDog stated in a media release. “In the past two years alone the organization has fostered and re-homed more than 50 older dogs. Where possible, senior dogs are placed in homes with senior humans.”

“ElderDog not only helps aging dogs and aging people stay together in life, we also acknowledge the importance of commemorating loss,” says founder and chairperson Dr. Ardra Cole. “Place to Paws will provide a space to acknowledge that loss and honour the life and special relationship that will live forever in memory.”

This event will include live music, dog-related activities, raffles, yard sales, vendors, barbecue and is free, open to the public. Dogs are welcome to attend – leash optional. A release of butterflies in memory of lost companions will follow a brief memorial service at 3 p.m.
