Tylluan O'Sinend is excited about introducing kids to the performing arts through a new theatre outreach program being offered in several Valley communities.
O’Sinend, who resides in Nictaux, is working with the Margaretsville-based Evergreen Theatre to offer theatre classes in Bridgetown, Berwick and Middleton. Sessions are now underway in Bridgetown and Berwick and O’Sinend hopes to have a location soon for the Middleton program.
The program is offered to junior participants, between the ages of six and nine, and a senior group between the ages of nine and 13. O'Sinend brings a passion for getting young people involved in the arts and a wealth of experience gained from a career in the music and theatre business to the program. Her goal is to get kids “involved in something,” and have them understand “the things they love were created by people.”
Not long after moving to the Valley, she realized there was very little in the way of theatre offerings for younger children. She was drawn to the Evergreen Theatre, owned and operated by David O’Leary, because she heard such good things about it.
“Everybody said I had to check it out, so I did. And when I approached David about this endeavour, he did everything he could to facilitate it.”
Youth taking part in the 10-week program will work towards creating a movie with a “green theme.” O’Sinend plans to provide the structure for the project, but says the children will be responsible for the creative direction of the piece.
“I believe in sparking children’s imaginations by letting them come up with their own ideas,” she said.
