One congregation, speaking two languages, gathers on a monthly basis at St. Lawrence Church in Canning.

One Sunday recently, seasonal workers from Mexico, along with parishioners from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Canning, enjoyed a special afternoon. They enjoyed soccer, followed by mass in Spanish American, and then a barbeque at St. Lawrence Church.

“Soccer is such a great way to bring people together if you can’t speak the same language,” says Andy Webster, who was involved with coordinating the event.  He said the afternoon is a way of reaching out to the workers who returned again this summer. A similar afternoon scheduled for July 6 was cancelled due to Hurricane Arthur.

A third is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7, beginning with a soccer game at 2 p.m. on the soccer fields behind Glooscap Elementary School.  Everyone is invited to show up and play.  The hope is for a friendly Canada versus Mexico friendly game.

The game will be followed by another mass in Spanish American at 4 p.m. and another barbeque will take place afterwards.

All are very welcome to attend to express support and gratitude to the seasonal workers.  Contributions of food to the barbeque event are appreciated because a good soccer game has the tendency to build hearty appetites, Webster said.
