New Minas entrepreneur Shelley Fleckenstein made the top-100 list of enterprising women in Canada this year, compiled by Profit Magazine.
The 11th annual Profit W100 list showcases female entrepreneurs delivering world-class products and services, and reaping the rewards. Fleckenstein ranked 74th.
Owner of Kings Physiotherapy Clinic Ltd., Fleckenstein is no newcomer to the awards scene. The 1988 graduate won the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation Hall of Fame Award in 2006 for adopting a community service orientation.
She has been a fundraiser for the Western Nova Scotia Region Hip Hip Hooray Walk and also received the Corporate Fundraising Award.
The clinic is also involved with Cystic Fibrosis, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Screening for Wellness breast screening programs, the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and the Crohns and Colitis Foundation.
According to Fleckstein, the magazine delved into her style of business operations in great detail: the form was about 20 pages long. Profit was interested in company breakthroughs and achievements, as well as obstacles and business practices that led to growth. “The process was very extensive, but well worth it,” she said. “Winning a recognition like this really helps enhance the profile of my profession. “It is a good feeling to have the fruits of our labors recognized in such a tangible way.”
Fleckenstein and Kings Physiotherapy have also been recognized by the Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce (Outstanding Innovator of the Year 2008), RBC Canadian Woman Entrepeneur of the Year 2008 and Rotman Canadian Woman Entrepeneur of the Year - 2003 and 2004.
The clinic opened 14 years ago and employs 21 full time staff. Services offered are often augmented. The latest innovations are nerve testing, a rare service outside the hospital setting, and knee bracing. “I really enjoy what I do and I like to bring a new awareness to this ever evolving and interesting profession,” said Fleckenstein.
