YARMOUTH, NS – The Chris Scott Construction Peewee AA Gateways completed their 2018 baseball season with a silver medal at the tier 1 provincial championships in New Glasgow over the Labour Day weekend.
On Friday the Gateways started their tournament against the host team, the New Glasgow blizzards, and lost 10-7. The Gateways got off to a slow start. Miguel deJesus hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to get things going. The Gateways then scored five runs in the sixth to bring the score to 8-7. In the next inning the home team scored two more and the Gateways fell short by a final score of 10-7. Ben Lyons was named player of the game for his stellar performance in centre field.
On Saturday morning, the Gateways lost their second game to the Springhill Fence Busters 9-6. Miguel deJesus was awarded player of the game. He was strong at shortstop and then came in as a solid relief pitcher.
Later that day, the Gateways played the Hants North Jays and had a solid game, winning it 12-2 in five innings. Luke MacLeay hit two home runs and had five runs batted in and was player of the game. Blake Newell pitched a complete game.
On Sunday, the Gateways played their final game against the Kentville Wildcats and won it 18-3 in four innings. The Wildcats struggled with pitching and the Gateways scored 13 runs in the first inning. Rookie Mason Légère hit a long ball to centre field that scored the final runs of the game and was named player of the game.
The host team New Glasgow Blizzards secured their spot in the Atlantic championship later this month in Fredericton because they went undefeated in round-robin play. This meant that the Gateways, Jays and Fence Busters were in a three-way tie for second place, each with a 2-2 record. The tie breaker goes to the team that has given up the fewest defensive runs per defensive inning played, therefore the Gateways finished in second place and were awarded the silver medal.
The Gateways had a great season and would like to thank their coaches Scott Jeffery, Curtis Falls and Jake MacLeay for a fun-filled baseball season.
