YARMOUTH, N.S. — The GPK Refrigeration Peewee A Mariners earned gold in the annual Joe Lamontagne March Break Tournament in Cole Harbour, defeating the TASA Ducks 4-1 in the championship.

The Mariners opened round-robin play with a 6-1 win over the Hockey NS North Conference Champions Pictou County Crushers. Player of the game Damien Cottreau opened the scoring with additional goals scored by Blake Newell, Conner Pothier, Lucas Cottreau, Boston Aldred and Alyre Richardson.

The second round-robin game saw the Mariners edge out the East Hants Penguins 4-3 led by a strong showing between the pipes from goalie, and player of the game, Brady Saulnier. Scoring for the Mariners were Ashton Samms, Blake Newell, Alyre Richardson and Drew Muise.

The Mariners wrapped up the final game of round robin play with a 4-0 win over the Eastern Shore Mariners. Blake Newell earned the player of the game award by scoring a hat-trick with Boston Aldred adding an additional goal.

The semifinal game saw goalie Brady Saulnier earn his second consecutive shutout, when the Mariners defeated the Shelburne Flames 3-0. Alyre Richardson opened the scoring, with Blake Newell and player of the game Sean-Phillippe Fernandez both adding goals to close out the game.

The championship game featured two undefeated teams when the Mariners faced the TASA Ducks for the Joe Lamontagne banner. After going down 1-0 early in the game, the Mariners bounced back with four unanswered goals to take the banner. Player of the game Drew Muise led the team with a goal and an assist, with additional goals from Blake Newell, Damien Cottreau and Alyre Richardson.

Next up, the Mariners will be hosting the Sackville Flyers for the Hockey NS South Conference Championship at Yarmouth Mariners Center on Saturday, March 30 at 3:30 p.m.
