Valley Heat girls take the U14 basketball title at Horton tournament

Jeff Cummins, who coached the team on and off, for five or six years is chuffed with the win. His daughter, Sydney, is one of the players.
“They were fantastic,” coach Cummins said. “They’re very close knit, best friends, and they have what it takes to compete.”
“Most of them have been playing together since they were five or six years old,” he says, noting that they were part of a school team in Wolfville.
Moving onto the Metro Leaque, Cummins said, meant trips to Bedford most weekends to take part in division play.
“They’re extremely competitive,” he added, taking on teams from the Valley, Cape Breton, Pictou, Antigonish and three Metro teams to win the title.
He says they actually defeated another Valley team, the Junior Axewomen, in the finals. The Axewomen were coached by Fred Cumby.
The Valley Heat team has members from Berwick, Windsor, New Minas and six players from Wolfville.
The Acadia University football coach added his appreciation for the coaching assistance of Dwayne MacLeod, another dad, this year, especially while the football season was still underway.
“He’s helped coach the girls for eons. We have a great relationship,” he said.
