TRURO, NS - A Port Williams teen won her first NSGA women’s amateur trophy July 8 with a narrow victory over the defending champ.

Heather McLean, who golfs out of the Ken-Wo course in New Minas, had a tough battle on the greens in Truro over the weekend tournament.

Heather started out the tournament with a strong finish on the first day, with a total of 74, tied for first with defending champion Allison Chandler from Osprey Ridge. Cristal Fitzpatrick from Grandview trailed by one point while Heather’s older sister, Meghan, was nine back with 83.

Heather continued with a strong performance on Day 2, finishing with a total of 76 – a score shared by both Fitzpatrick and Meghan. Chandler finished with a total of 78.

It was a tight race heading into the final round, with three players all within a stroke of each other. Heather, who was leading by one stroke heading into the final round, extended that lead after carding a one-over par 73 and finished with a three-day total of 223.

In second place was Chandler with a solid three-over 75 and a three-day total of 227. Fitzpatrick slipped one spot on the leaderboard and finished with a three-day total of 233 to round out the top three, while Meghan just missed out on the top three, ending up in fourth place with a three-day score of 237.
