Monica Sweetapple, the president of the Brooklyn-based skating club, said figure skaters will be showing off their talent April 23 when they host Mary Poppins on Ice.

“We actually always do a pretty fantastic job of our ice shows. The rink will be decorated, lighting will be done. The kids are all in costumes,” said Sweetapple.

Chloe Harvie (Uncle Albert) will be showcasing her skating talent during Mary Poppins on Ice April 23.

“What it really does is demonstrate the skaters' progress over the year.”

The show, which will be held at the Newport and District Arena in Brooklyn at 3 p.m., will feature the songs that made Mary Poppins so popular.

Graduating skater Nicole Leary is ready to take on the role of Mary Poppins in the Riverview Skating Club's year-end performance on April 23.

Nicole Leary, who will be one of two graduating skaters playing Mary Poppins, said she can't wait to entertain the audience.

“I'm so excited. I got to help pick the ice show this year and I thought Mary Poppins would be so much fun to do as a group,” said Leary.

“It's got a lot of energy and a lot of really fun, upbeat music, which is going to be so much fun to skate to,” she said. “There are some really great classics. Some of my favourite songs are in there.”

Leary hopes the audience will sing along.

Sweetapple said they will have a bake table and 50-50 draw available. The show generally breaks even, she said, but last year, when they performed Frozen on Ice, they made money — which helps to keep the cost of the programs down.

“It's not our goal for it to be a fundraiser but last year, we were pleasantly surprised. I think we had $2,000 from the show — that was after all the expenses,” she said.

“Our fundraising money always goes back into the club to keep prices down because it's all volunteers. The only people paid are our coaches because they're professionals.”

Bishop Lake (Bert) gets ready to stick the landing. Lake has one of the lead roles in the upcoming performance of Mary Poppins on Ice.
