The Machine, who are still waiting to find out if they finish first or second in the Division 2 standings, played their hearts, keeping the Division 1 Tars on their toes.
“I think we just decided that we needed to turn on the heat. We started playing more as a team and less as individuals. I think that made the difference in the second half for sure,” said Maria Smith, who played the No. 10 position.
The final score was 42-29 for the Tars – but Smith said that's good considering the Tars are in a higher division and the Machine were fielding 14 instead of 15 women. She said the crossover game helped test the Machine's skills.
“I know that I'm really happy going into playoffs with that game,” she said.
Playoff dates have yet to be finalized.
Smith said some of the standout players during the Aug. 12 bout at King's-Edgehill School were Danielle Wisen, Kasey McDermott, Carla du Toit, and Justine Blatt-Janmaat.
