WOLFVILLE, N.S. — It’s without question the strongest performance in curling to date for Kings County Special Olympians at the provincial winter games.
Camp Aldershot hosted the 2019 Nova Scotia Special Olympics Winter Games from Feb. 22 to 24 with more than 700 athletes representing all regions of Nova Scotia in attendance. The curling competition was hosted by the Wolfville Curling Club, with 17 teams vying for medals in the four seeded divisions.
Kings Special Olympics curling was represented by three teams, one in each of the top three divisions. All three teams had two wins and a loss during the round-robin play and advanced to gold medal games, a feat Don Sanford, one of the coaches, said “we never dreamed of.”
“Without a doubt, this is the best showing by Special Olympics Kings curlers in their eight appearances at the bi-annual provincial winter games,” Sanford said.
In “C” division, Kings was represented by skip Bruce Lightle, mate Stephen Parkin, second Johanna Sutcliffe, lead Darcy Marshall, alternate Jenn Pothier and coach John Sutcliffe. In their final, they defeated a strong Halifax squad 5-2 in the four-end game for the gold.
In “B” division, skip John Robicheau, mate Amy Rodrigues, second Justin Welton, lead Alissa Zwicker and coach Shannon McGrath guided Kings to a silver medal in a tight, four-end final against Yarmouth. The Yarmouth team won 3-2, capturing the gold.
In “A” division, the Kings area, captained by skip Luke Smith along with mate Tammy MacMillan, second Dave Coffey, lead Josh Kingston, alternate Danny Knox and coach Don Sanford, won the division championship. Sanford described the gold-medal win as “a nail-biting 5-3, five-end thriller.”
