The games, played April 27 at KES, were close affairs – a trend that fans can expect to continue to see throughout the season.

The KES girls took a 12-10 victory over the Avalanche while the boys defeated AVHS 19-17.

Avon View's senior boys' coach, Axel Lawrence, said for a second league game, he was impressed with their showing.

“Even though we were down 19-5, our guys didn't really give up. We had a man down there with a yellow card and we were able to battle back and bring the game to within a kick. To me, that's a positive,” said Lawrence.

“This is early in the year for them to show that heart and determination – it's really good.”

The pitch was a slippery mess April 27 by the time Avon View and King's-Edgehill senior boys rugby teams were ready to play.

Jim Bryan, the head coach for the AV senior girls' team, said it's going to be a “barn burner of a season” as the games with KES are always close.

Avon View's girls team is back in action May 2 when they host Park View and May 4 when they host NKEC. Also on May 2, the KES girls travel to West Kings. On May 4, Central Kings visits KES to take on the girls team, and then the boys team.

On May 6, Avon View hosts its annual rugby fest, with girls' teams from across the Valley competing.
