Up for grabs was the Western Regional Rugby banner and an automatic spot at provincials.
Both teams fought hard, but KES emerged victorious, defeating Avon View 22-16.
“It is disappointing. The kids battled hard. You could tell they wanted to win,” said Avon View coach Axel Lawrence, noting the game was pretty back and forth in terms of scoring.
“We ended up scoring on the last play of the game. Unfortunately... we didn't get the chance to tie it up,” he said.
The coach highlighted the strong performances of Nathan Lake, David George, Will Caines and Sami Whidden.
“Manny Byers probably had his best game of the season. He did the place kicking for us,” said Lawrence.
With the win, King's-Edgehill will go to provincials as the No. 1 seed in the western region. In order for Avon View to make it to provincials, they must defeat the third place team from the capital region.
“We haven't really seen much of the Halifax teams but they're strong,” said Lawrence.
“They all have a number of players involved in the provincial programs so I expect them to be very strong and very organized.”
As of press time, the date, time and location for the provincial qualifying game had yet to be determined.
Provincials will be held June 2-3 at Northumberland Regional High School.
