KENTVILLE, NS – The Kentville’s Silver Gliders' upcoming holiday show promises to be the perfect way for all to jump into Christmas.
The event will happen Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. and will feature all of the club skaters and synchronized teams for the ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ themed show.
Club president Darlene Redden-Graves said she'd looking forward to this year’s show, which is the club's third annual.
“Our skaters are really excited this year. It’s going to be a great performance, and a fun family activity for people to enjoy,” she said.
Getting excited to get into character
Breagh Blenus, 9, has been skating since she was 4. She is on the Revolution synchronized skate team, and will be a flight attendant during the team’s performance at the show.
She’s only feeling slightly nervous for the show, since she’ll be joined on the ice by her teammates who are also her friends.
“I love performing for the crowd, Drags and waltz jumps are my favourite moves,” she said.
Ada May Levy, 7, said she’s been skating “since pretty much last year.”
Levy will skate as a sugar plum fairy for the show, with a costume covered in lollipops.
She joined figure skating after discovering a love of dancing.
“I like doing it on the ice. Skating with my friends is fun,” she said.
Levy is working on her crossovers before the show, and has just started learning how to do them backwards.
“They’re O.K. I’m learning pretty quick,” she said.
Claire Slade is one of the club’s more experienced skaters and, at age 11, has already been skating for seven years.
She and her friends have been cast as mischievous elves, ready to mess with other skaters on the ice.
“These performances are the best because we get competitions out of our minds and just have fun,” she said.
Showcasing skaters and raising funds
Club president Darlene Redden-Graves said the show was started as another way to raise funds for the group’s competition costs.
Free-will offering stations will be set up at tables at the door in lieu of selling tickets.
Redden-Graves also said the show is also intended to give the skaters a chance to showcase their moves and let loose, like Slade said.
The synchronized skating teams will also perform at the show, showing friends and family what they’ve learned this year while the team has been vying for a spot at nationals.
“It’s a nice little break for them to stop concentrating on preparing for test days and competitions, and sometimes they get to design some of their own routines for it,” said Redden-Graves.
“They have fun with it.”
