WINDSOR, N.S. - The Windsor Royals concluded their 2018-19 Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League Season on Jan. 27 in Windsor against the league’s last place team the Sackville Blazers.
Now the team is preparing for the playoffs and have their sights set on the Maritime North Hockey Championship scheduled for Woodstock, N.B. March 27-31.
But before the Royals can even start to plan or dream about the championship, they will have to get down to business with the Cumberland Colts in a Best of 5 series scheduled to open in Springhill Feb. 2. Game 2 will be back in Windsor on Feb. 3 at 5 p.m.
The Royals have had an up and down season. Some nights they played superbly, defeating the league-leading Spryfield Attack, who stood at 21-4-2 as of this writing. Yet on other nights, they struggled to defeat the fifth place Cumberland Colts and sixth place Sackville Blazers.
Goaltending has been an issue for the majority of the season as the Royals have been using a variety of netminders in an attempt to find one that will be capable of taking them on a playoff run.
Both the Colts and Royals will have to improve on their goals against in the upcoming series as Windsor finished the season with a -24 on 114 goals scored and 138 allowed while Cumberland was even worse, scoring 99 and allowing 146 for a -47.
The Royals had three players in their line-up with 30 point plus seasons. Kyle Armsworthy finished 14th in league scoring with 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points followed by Brandon Sullivan with 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points and Justin MacLellan with 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points.
Sullivan and Armsworthy dressed for almost all of the Windsor Royals games while MacLellan averaged two points a game as he played in only 15 games with the hometown team.
As for the Colts, they had two 30-point scorers in Seth Colpitts, who netted 21 goals and collected 38 points, while Anthony Gardiner-Cormier, registered 34 points.
After games on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3, the Royals will travel to Springhill Feb. 9 for Game 3 at 7 p.m. If Game 4 is necessary, the Colts will visit Windsor for a 5 p.m. start. Should the series require a tie-breaker, Game 5 is slated for Windsor at 8 p.m. on Feb. 11.
