WINDSOR, N.S. — The Valley Maple Leafs continue to valiantly fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Fred Fox Division.
They won their fourth consecutive game Feb. 1 at home 5-3 over the Liverpool Privateers but then lost their Feb. 8 match against their Highway 101 rivals, the Sackville Blazers, 5-2.
Ian Drysdale started the scoring off for the Leafs in their Friday evening battle with the Blazers. By the end of the first period, the teams were knotted at 1-1.
The Sackville Blazers scored twice in the second period to lead the game 3-1.
The Blazers scored midway through the third to hold a commanding 4-1 lead until Carter Davidson, with five minutes to go, scored to bring the game to 4-2. The hometown team rallied but couldn’t find the back of the net. With three seconds remaining, the Blazers salted the game away by scoring an empty net goal.
The Leafs are on the road Feb. 15 when they visit the East Hants Penguins.
There has been no word from the Maple Leafs’ executive as to when, or if, their postponed Dec. 18 game with Port Hawkesbury will be played in Windsor. There is a chance that the Leafs may wait until after their Feb. 22 game, at home against Cole Harbour, to decide whether the game would be necessary.
With the way the Maple Leafs have been playing as of late, there is a good chance the game will be required as long as the Leafs can take care of business in the remaining games of the season.
The East Hants Penguins currently lead the Fred Fox Division, with Sackville, Liverpool and Cole Harbour filling out the top spots. The Leafs are in fifth place, and the Brookfield Elks are in last place.
