Digby Mariners win challenge game to advance to regionals

DIGBY, N.S. – The Digby Mariners won a March 2 challenge game over the Yarmouth Vikings to advance to NSSAF high school hockey Division 2 Western boys regionals being held March 4 and 5 in Canning.

The two Division 2 teams had to play a challenge game to determine which team would secure the 4th spot in regionals.

Digby scored first, and early, in the game in front of a large home-town crowd for a 1-0 lead after one period.

The score saw some back and forth in second period with Yarmouth tying the game 1-1, Digby going up 2-1, Yarmouth knotting things up again 2-2 before Digby scored twice more for a 4-2 lead after two periods.

Digby added to their goals total with three more in the third period for the 7-2 win.

Scoring Digby’s goals were Ryan Gunn, Joel Connell, Logan Bell (2), Andre Noclav, Braden Trimper (2). Jacob Murphy was in net.

This is the regionals schedule at the Canning arena:

SUNDAY, MARCH 4

1 p.m. NKEC vs Central Kings

2:45 p.m. West Kings vs Digby

6:15 p.m. West Kings vs NKEC

8 p.m. Digby vs Central Kings

MONDAY, MARCH 5

9 am Central Kings vs West Kings

10:45 a.m. Digby vs NKEC

1:30 pm Championship game

Division 2 NSSAF high school hockey provincials are being hosted by East Hants. It is a four-team tournament. If Hants East wins their Northumberland regionals than first and second place from these Western regionals will advance with the third-place team having to play a qualifier for a spot in provincials.

If Hants East does not win their Northumberland regionals than the winner of Westerm regionals advances to provincials and the second place Western team will have to play a qualifying game for a spot in provincials.
