WINDSOR, N.S. — The Avon View Avalanche’s girls’ hockey team did not lose a game in the regular season last year and to date, this season is shaping up to be a repeat.
The only catch with the 2018-19 season is that they have been held to a pair of ties.
The most recent tie came during a hard-fought contest in Windsor Jan. 12 as the Northeast Kings Titans visited and played the Avalanche to a 3-3 draw.
Amy Lloy scored her 10th goal of the season just 11 seconds into that game on a shot to the left of the NKEC net. That was all the scoring for the opening period before Rachel Sheffield and Riley Abbott put the Titans ahead 2-1, with Sheffield scoring on a breakaway.
Lloy then tied it for the Avalanche on an assist from Brittany Poole with 9:36 to play in the middle period. The scoring was not complete that period as Lauren Golding scored on another breakaway to give the Titans a 3-2 lead.
The only scoring in the third came off the stick of the Valley High School Girls’ Hockey League leading scorer Zoey Rafuse. She connected for her 14th goal of the season. Her record shows 11 assists for 25 points.
The Avalanche have been exceptionally busy on the ice. Avon View still has a commanding lead in the standings with a 9-0-2 record for 20 points.
As for registering ties, head coach Rob Davies said it was better than losing.
“We got a point and it is a whole lot better than getting nothing,” he said.
Davies credited the Titans on their “aggressive play.”
In previous play
Avon View defeated West Kings 3-2.
West Kings opened the scoring Jan. 11 at Credit Union Place in Kingston before Rafuse tied it for the Avalanche at 1-1 to end the first period.
Delaney Hartt and Poole, with only one second to play in the second, put the Avalanche up 3-1. The Avalanche hung on in the third following a West Kings goal to win it 3-2.
Avon View had no problem handling Horton, defeating them 4-1.
Lily Price, for Horton, opened the game’s scoring 56 seconds into the second frame. Avon View rebounded with a pair of goals from Makayla Kelvey and Lloy.
Avon View then scored a pair of goals 1:47 apart to salt the victory away in the third period. Goal scorers were Rafuse and Kelvey.
Avon View had to settle for a 3-3 tie against the Central Kings Gators Jan. 4 in Berwick.
In a very entertaining game, Megan McCarthy scored with 31 seconds left in the first to put the Avalanche ahead 1-0. McCarthy then made it 2-0 in the second before Central Kings tallied a marker.
In the third period, Central Kings scored to tie it 2-2 and then, within an eight-second span, the game was tied 3-3, with the Avalanche’s Rafuse scoring the tying goal.

• Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. versus the Middleton Monarchs at the Middleton Arena.
• Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. versus the West Kings Wolverines at the GFL Newport Recreation Centre.
