GLACE BAY, N.S. — A Canadian hockey commentator paid tribute to a young Cape Breton girl who died from a sudden illness last month.
During Coach’s Corner at the first intermission of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final between the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins Wednesday night, Don Cherry acknowledged the late Jaycee Tracey, daughter of Allison Kendall and Carter Tracey.
The four-year-old Glace Bay girl died from meningococcal septicemia and was a fan of the Bruins.
During the segment, Cherry showed a picture of Tracey wearing her Bruins jersey.
“She was the No. 1 Bruin fan of all-time,” said Cherry during the Hockey Night In Canada segment. “She just loved the Bruins… big Bruin fan, isn’t she beautiful?”
To honour Jaycee’s memory, some of Kendall’s friends and softball teammates came up with the idea of launching Jay It Forward — a movement encouraging people to perform acts of kindness for others.
“Jay It Forward is to commemorate Jaycee, do a good deed to keep her spirit alive,” Kendall said in an interview with the Cape Breton Post last week, adding she also wants to raise awareness about meningococcal septicemia.
Anyone who recounts an act of kindness that they’ve performed in Jaycee’s memory is asked to use the hashtag #JayItForward.
