WINDSOR, N.S. — Four games are to be played over the long weekend to determine which team will host the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League Championship Tournament Aug. 31 to Sept. 1.
The 14-4 Windsor Knights are slated to head to Pictou for a rematch with the last place Royals Aug. 4 while the 13-5 Sherose Island Schooners are at home to the 4-11 Truro Bearcats in a make-up doubleheader.
The Knights, as a result of their 10-0 trouncing of the Bearcats in Truro, moved two points up on the Schooners in the standings. During that game, Devan Dunfield snapped out of the slump he’s had at the plate this season by recording a triple and two singles to raise his average to .255.
Jason Hanes tossed the win for the Knights, his second of the season, and kept his earned run average at 1.63.
On July 28 in Windsor, the Knights defeated Pictou County 8-2 and 8-7. In the 8-2 victory, the Knights’ Alex Sabean threw a one-hitter through six innings. The Knights plated seven consecutive runs in the fourth inning on seven consecutive hits as Austin Sabean, Joe Beaton and Alex Patterson all went two for four.
In the 8-7 see-saw battle, the Knights staked themselves to a 7-2 lead but the Royals closed to within one at 7-6 with a four-run fifth. Windsor scored one more run in the sixth to go up by two. The Royals could only muster one run as they tried to tie it in the seventh. Cory Whitney had a triple and three runs for the Knights. Adam Ferguson started the game and went three innings before Austin Sabean pitched the next three to earn the win. Paul Humphreys took over in the seventh and earned the save.
With each team recording three points for a win and one point for a loss, it essentially boils down to the Knights winning both games in Pictou and the Schooners splitting the doubleheader with the Bearcats. If this happens, it will give the Knights 52 points and the Schooners 48, and will give the Knights the opportunity to host the tournament.
JAYS STILL IN RUNNING FOR PLAYOFFS
Heading into weekend play, the Noel Road Jays were in a three-way battle for the final two playoff berths with the Pictou County Albions and the Amherst Athletics.
The Jays were coming off of two losses to Sherose Island on July 27.
In the first game, Sherose won 10-7. The Jays were overpowered by the Schooners as Justin Campbell pitched five innings in taking the loss. Josh Burke was two for three in the losing cause and Colan McCulloch was two for three as well with a pair of stolen bases.
The other loss was 4-3. In it, Shaun Marshall pitched 2.2 innings in suffering the loss for the Jays. Mike White went two for four with two RBIs.
UPCOMING GAMES
The Windsor Knights will visit the Noel Road Jays Aug. 11 for a doubleheader. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
