In the semi-finals, Guysborough defeated the South Shore Crush, based in Bull Arm, Nfld., 7-0 in five innings while the Placentia Phillies blanked Hoyt, New Brunswick 3-0.
The West Hants Thunder, who were hosting the tournament, didn't advance to the semi-finals. However, Thunder head coach Raymond Croft said he was pleased with the team's effort. They went 1-3.
Croft said he was impressed with the pitching performances of his two aces, Ben McCarthy and Cameron Burgess.
“It was two grand slam home runs that cost us in two games,” said Croft.
One of those games was an 8-7 win over Bull Arm. The seven runs allowed hurt them when the final math was done late in the day Sept. 10, which showed that Bull Arm, West Hants and Antigonish were all tied for fourth place in the standings. Bull Arm advanced to the playoffs with a -3 run differential compared to a -10 by the Thunder and -15 by the Antigonish Diamondbacks.
In the 8-7 win, McCarthy connected for three singles including a two-run shot in the fifth inning while Nolan Oakley also collected three base hits. Carter Hood had a two-run double in the first inning and Cole Comeau had a triple in the sixth inning when the Thunder scored three times.
The Thunder could have advanced to the playoff round if they could have defeated the Hoyt Highsox. It was a tight 3-2 game on Sept 10.
Hoyt took a 2-0 lead after three innings following a walk and a triple with the centre fielder throwing over the head of the catcher for an error. West Hants bounced back in the fourth inning as Oakley smacked a drive straight down the third base line, which actually hit third base before bouncing down the left field line. Oakley scored on a New Brunswick throwing error. The Thunder tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning on a Sam Swinamer base hit, a Brendan Verge base hit and a two base error to the New Brunswick left-fielder.
New Brunswick finally won the game 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, two passed balls and a base hit.
“The Guysborough Broadhorns were the head of the class in the tournament,” said Croft, noting the pitcher was the best he had ever seen in U12 fastpitch softball.
