Napanee Express claims Eastern Canadian U16 Softball Championship <strong> </strong>

ST. CROIX - The West Hants Thunder bantam softball fastpitch team gave it every ounce of energy they could before finally falling in their second playoff game Aug. 30.

They lost to the eventual champion, the Napanee Express, by a score of 9-2.

Anthony Anderson, who pitched every game for the Thunder with the exception of one start, was tagged as the losing pitcher. But, received little offensive help as the Thunder were kept to three hits.

This marked the Thunder's sixth game of the tournament, having finished 3-1 in the round-robin portion before winning their opening playoff game 9-7 in nine innings over the Avalon Peninsula from Newfoundland.

In that match, the Thunder led 3-1 early in the contest but fell behind 5-3 before tying the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The teams exchanged a pair of runs in the eighth inning before the Thunder scored a pair in their half of the ninth for the 9-7 win.

Brendan Walker's sacrifice fly provided the Thunder with their ninth run.

The following are highlights from earlier play, in which the Thunder placed second overall at 3-1.

 

Lyn Lightning 4, Thunder 2

The Lyn Lightning, from Ontario, managed to double the West Hants Thunder 4-2 in this game.

The Thunder scored twice in the fifth inning and led 2-0 before Lyn rallied for four runs in the sixth inning with a triple and double and a couple of critical errors by the Thunder.

Caleb Hamilton had a two-run triple for the Thunder after Tyrell Beals and Anderson, who suffered the pitching loss, singled.

 

Thunder 14, St. Andrew's 0

Walker began the onslaught for the Thunder with a two-run double in the first and then Nathan Lake connected for a grand slam home run in the third inning when the Thunder plated 11 runs.

Anderson was the winning pitcher, hurling a three hitter.

 

Thunder 11, Taymouth Tigers 4

Walker tripled as part of his offensive heroics, which earned him the tournament MVP in the round-robin portion.

Anderson scored three runs.

The Taymouth Tigers, from New Brunswick, was one of the weakest teams in the tournament. They had just come off a 26-4 loss to Eastern Speedway's team from Newfoundland.

 

Thunder 7, Eastern Speedway 6

The Thunder scored five runs in the fourth inning and received triples from Walker and Hamilton in their 7-6 victory over Newfoundland’s Eastern Speedway.

 

Tournament overview

Tournament director Paula George said she was delighted with the assistance she received from parents and all volunteers after the West Hants Thunder were awarded the tournament in January.

George noted that Shane Rogers, the Thunder’s head coach, played a vital role in the organization.

“It was a true pleasure to work with all teams entered in the tournament,” she said.
