After an effort initiated by local resident and ball coach Mark Nickerson, with help from his wife Angela and many others, an electronic scoreboard has been installed at the Mariners Field off Forest Street.
“I’m pretty elated over it,” says Nickerson, who started pursuing the possibility of an electronic scoreboard last year.
On July 20 of this year it was installed.
Nickerson says getting from there to here was a long process.
A major part of the process was fundraising, which included a lot of barbecues and other fundraising that was very dear to Nickerson’s heart. Last year and this year he, with help from others, organized a softball tournament in memory of his father and brother Herman and Allen Nickerson. Money raised went towards the new scoreboard. Funds from that tournament will also go towards the goal of a dome building to allow for baseball to be practiced year round.
Yarmouth Recreation also contributed $5,000 towards the scoreboard project, Nickerson says.
The scoreboard cost around $10,500 plus tax. Then there are costs associated with the electrical hookup and the installation platform.
At one point early on there had been thought of purchasing a scoreboard that could pivot to service the Mariners Field and the adjacent Veterans Field, but the cost was too expensive. The Mariners Field is the most used field of the two. It is heavily used by Yarmouth and Area Minor Baseball Association teams.
Nickerson said he intends to have some type of commemoration, perhaps in the form of a plaque, acknowledging all those who helped make this electronic scoreboard project a reality.
The scoreboard will certainly be appreciated during some upcoming events at the field, including a bantam tournament this weekend and a mosquito provincial tournament later this summer.
