GILBERT, Vernon ‘Vern’ Westmount, Cape Breton On Thursday, October 17, 2019, Everett Vernon ‘Vern’ Gilbert passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 78. Born in Glace Bay on April 5, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph and Jennie (MacDonald) Gilbert. He is survived by his brother, Joseph, Ottawa; and sister, Linda, Glace Bay; and predeceased by brothers, Gerald, Garfield and Calvin; and sisters, Pauline and Velma. Vern is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Lori (Petrie) formerly of Dominion. He was proud and active in the lives of his three children, Jim (Donna McCawley), Moncton, Nicole (Brent Fifield), Howie Centre and Leanne (John Carter), Eastern Passage; along with grandchildren, Miya, Nathan, Marley, Ben and Jace. He was an accomplished newspaper man, starting his career with the Canadian Press in various cities only to return to Cape Breton and for the next 36 years held various positions at the Cape Breton Post, completing his career as Editor prior to his retirement. He loved to help others and was involved for many years in Sydney Minor Hockey. He enjoyed great friendships as a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish Men’s Club. Vern had a special relationship with his wife, Lori and they were always together. They were active members in the Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount. He was known for his kind spirit and gift for connecting with people. He was at his best telling stories and making people smile. Vern loved being surrounded by family and creating unique relationships with all his grandchildren. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, October 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount on Monday, October 21 at 11 a.m., with Father Doug Murphy officiating.
