Una A Palmer

AMHERST / APPLE RIVER – Una A. Palmer, age 87, of Amherst and formerly of Apple River went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Apple River, she was a daughter of the late Delbert and Bessie (Slocum) McWhirter. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, the Rev. Jack W. Palmer; her daughters, Sandra Irving (Gordon), Bedford; Karen Downie (Bill), Quispamsis, N.B.; her grandchildren, Jason Downie, Julianna (Irving) Melanson (Jeffery), Jacalyn (Downie) MacLean (David), and Jeffrey Irving; her great granddaughter, the joy of her life for the past 7 years, Ciara MacLean; her sister, Stella Watson; her sister-in-law, Irene McWhirter. She was predeceased by sisters, Phyllis Bailey (Franklyn) and Laura Merriam (Lloyd); her brother, Donald. She was also predeceased by Jack’s sister, Joyce and her husband, Chesley Green with whom she had a special relationship, visiting and travelling with them at least once every year. Una also had special relationships with all her nieces and nephews, 16 great nieces and nephews, and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. She was especially close with her niece, Joyce Jeffrey (Jim), great niece, Lori Carr (Wayne), great nephew, Chris Jeffrey and great-great nieces, Bailey and Ashley Carr. Una was always active in the various churches she and Jack pastored and attended. Music was always a personal love and she played the piano for several choirs and nursing home activities. She loved to sing and sang in many choirs over the years, and sang duets and quartets with family and friends. She was a Dominion Life Member of the Atlantic Baptist Women and held several positions in this group over the years. Una loved to quilt and crochet, and gave many special quilts to her family and friends. Una and Jack loved to travel visiting England, Scotland, Israel and many European countries, as well as crossing Canada and over half of the United States. When they visited England, they enjoyed spending time with Jack’s cousin, Jean Snell. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. May she rest now in God’s care. Visitation 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, and 11-1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at First Baptist Church, Amherst, where funeral will follow at 1 p.m., the Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Reception to follow.
