Liturgy of Christian burial for the late Sister Ada Fougere, 97, formerly Sister Daniel Theresa, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, was held June 4 in St. Martha Chapel, Parkland Antigonish, with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Sister Fougere died May 31, 2018, at Martha Place/Mary’s Court, Parkland Antigonish, in her 77th year of religious life. Cross bearer at the funeral Mass was Sister Bernardine MacIntosh. Pall carrier was Marion Snair. Readers were Sister Jean Harris, Sister Catherine Arsenault and Sister Marion Sheridan. Karen Fougere and Daphne Caissie presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by cantor Sister Rosalie Lahey, pianist Sheila Redden, leader of song Sister Lillian Gaudet and instrumentalist Sister Florence Kennedy. Pallbearers were Gordon Brow, Daniel Fougere, Seward Fougere, Roy LeBlanc, Leonard Snair and Rodney Snair. Born in Frankville, Antigonish County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Charlotte (Levangie) Fougere. She entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1939, pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1941, and made her perpetual commitment on August 15, 1945. In her 72 years of ministry, she was mainly engaged in household management duties. For 10 years, she cared for children at the Little Flower Institute, Bras d’Or. Other missions in Nova Scotia were, St. Martha’s Convent, Antigonish; Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax; St. Francis Xavier University, Marian Community, and Bethany, Antigonish. She spent six years in Ontario at the Cardinal’s Residence, and St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto, and one year on renewal in Arnprior. For the last number of years, while residing at Bethany, and most recently at Mary’s Court, Parkland Antigonish, Sister Ada lived her life of mission in prayer and Gospel Hospitality. Her Acadian culture and language were dear to her heart. Music was always part of her life wherever she lived. She enjoyed playing the violin at many Congregation gatherings. She was the fourth youngest in a family of 12 and was the last surviving member of her family. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters, Doris, Kathleen, Rita, Stella; seven brothers, Ambrose, Gilbert, Norbert, Seward, Sylvester, Arnold, Stanley.
