SMILEY, Shirley

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Smiley on October 10, 2019 at Valley View Villa with her family by her side after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Shirley was the daughter of the late Harold Lantz and Erdie (Eisnor) Lantz and step-daughter of the late Rena (Nowe) Lantz. Born in Bridgewater, Shirley and her husband Art moved to New Glasgow in 1967 then returned to Bridgewater in 1989, until her move back to Pictou County (Valley View Villa) in 2012. Shirley was a long-time employee of the Canada Envelope Company, Stellarton until her retirement. Shirley enjoyed many good times with her step-mother and best friend, Rena Lantz. She was also very active in the United Church, Bridgewater, and particularly loved singing in the choir. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Smiley; daughter, Darlene Smiley-MacDonald, and step-mother, Rena Lantz. Shirley is survived by her son, David Smiley (Pamela), New Glasgow; son-in-law, Alex MacDonald, Salt Springs; granddaughters, Alisha and Heather MacDonald; step-granddaughters, Allison and Shannon Hallett. The family would like to give sincere heartfelt thanks to Dr. Elliott and the staff of Valley View Villa for their care, compassion, support, and love during Shirley’s time with them. The arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. There will be no visitation or funeral. The family will have a small private service with interment in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of choice.
