Funeral service for the late Niko Goddfrey Clair, 29, Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation, was held April 13 in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, with Father Andrew Gillies officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley. Burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Summerside Road. Mr. Clair died tragically with his cousin, Ozzy Clair, on April 8, 2019, in his home of Paqtnkek Mikmaw Nation, Antigonish County. Readers at the funeral Mass were Molly Peters, Princess Clair, Angela Lafford and Jeremy Paul. Owen Clair, Rylan Clair and Lovie Clair presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Heatherton Folk Choir. Active pallbearers were Kyle Prosper, Doogie Julian, Avery Googoo, Denise Googoo, Julius Johnson and Brendan Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Marshall, Matthew Poulette, Laurie Julian, Lenny Thomas, Luke Pictou, Sage Peters, Bobby Peters, Misal Lafford, Angela Lafford, Lenora Prosper, Anoogwa Pictou, Tiffany Paul and Karen Ann Prosper. Born January 2, 1990, in Antigonish, he was the son of Gertie Savard-Clair, Halifax, and the late Bernard Peters. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his bros and loved to teach anyone who wanted to learn. He was a prankster with a contagious laugh and smile. He often volunteered and was there for anyone in time of need, especially when the community needed a fire keeper for ceremonies or funerals. He enjoyed the water, which made his oyster farmer job that much easier. He died a hero, trying to save his crew. Besides his mother, he is survived by his son, Owen Clair; three brothers, JR Peters, Halifax; Matthew Poulette, Eskasoni; Algoimo Augustine, Elsipogtog; sister, Joanne Poulette, Eskasoni; his foster parents, Kimberly Julian and Bobby Peters, Paqtnkek; former foster dad, Lenny Thomas, Lennox Island; four foster brothers, Sage, Storm, Samuel and Sunee Peters, Paqtnkek; three foster sisters, Skye and Starr Thomas, Molly Peters, Paqtnkek; special brother, Robert Marshall, Paqtnkek; special friends, Angela and Misal; many aunts and uncles; godmother, Sarah Johnson. He was predeceased by foster parents, Ethel ‘Mama’ and Charlie ‘Dadda’ Lewis; godfather, David Francis; foster grandparents, Lewis and Helen Clair; maternal grandparents, Tom Barlow and Kelbie Clair; paternal grandparents, Barney and Martha Peters.
