Mora Rose Hawley

Mora Rose Hawley
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we the family of Mora Rose Hawley, announce her peaceful passing at An Cala Palliative care, CB Reg. Hospital. Mora Rose was born in Sydney June 28, 1923, to Murdock and Maggie (MacIntyre) MacKinnon. She is the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her husband Kenny; daughter, Mary Elaine and infant son, William James. She is survived by her children; daughters, Carolyn Hawley, Dolores Sampson (Clifford), Cheryl Joseph (Richard); sons, Kenneth, Murdock, Christopher (Jane). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mora grew up in the north end of Sydney and attended and graduated Holy Angels Convent School. She was a very proud alumna of the Class of 1942. After graduating she married Kenny and started a family, she and Kenny were married 72 years. Raising a large family in lean economic times was not easy, however, she did her best. Although busy with her large family she found time to volunteer with the Girl Guides. She began in the 60’s first as a “Brown Owl” and then as a guide leader. She organized and attended many girl guide camps. In 1975 the International Girl Guides camp took place “on the Mira” Mom was chosen as transportation coordinator for the camp. She had to pick up people at Sydney Airport from all over the world. She warmly welcomed people to our island. Before her almost 40 years were finished she was named Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Nova Scotia a job she really enjoyed. During her tenure, she made many lifelong friends. Mora also volunteered with the CWL of St. Joseph’s Church for many years. She was a woman of deep religious faith who believed it her duty to help with affairs of her local church. Our amazing mother had many talents, a rolling pin was magic in her hands producing the flakiest pies and biscuits and squares. Her soft molasses cookies were the best. Mom loved gardening and had the greenest thumb for indoor and outdoor plants. She could turn a hole in the ground into a lush floral oasis. She loved bird watching and nurtured and loved many pets over the years. Some of Mom’s happiest days were spent camping in Ingonish with her family. She said she felt totally at peace on the beach, listening to the surf. A great homemaker, she loved to decorate. She made anyone who came to her home feel welcome. She offered you all she had. Although it is the saddest time for us we have faith in our belief that Mom is reunited with family members that have gone before. Rest in peace until we meet again. our beautiful mother. Special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit, such wonderful caring staff. Very special thanks to Donna Vatcher, Mom’s homecare worker who became a wonderful caring friend. In lieu of flowers please perform a random act of kindness.
