Funeral service for the late Mary Cameron, 89, was held September 4 in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, with Father Danny MacLennan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Cameron died August 29, 2019.

Born September 21, 1929, in Glenora Falls, Cape Breton, she had eight brothers and four sisters. While caring for her five younger siblings due to her mom death at age 47, she completed her Nova Scotia teaching license and became a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. She taught at the Glenora School before marrying Donald D. Cameron of Riverville.  She was an excellent cook, making homemade food from the farm including cheese and curds, butter, pickles, beets, biscuits, bread, farmed beef, chicken and pork. She looked forward each summer to her Ontario and New Brunswick families arriving home to enjoy Cape Breton music, fresh seafood, homemade cheese, fiddle and piano music played by family and friends. She enjoyed bowling in earlier years and playing cards at home and at the Mabou Hall. In later years, she was employed by the Strathlorne Tree Nursery for 11 years.

She is survived eight children, Alex (Ann), Anita (David), Patricia (Terry), Francis (Abelina), Ray (Cathy), Stanley (Charlotte), Gary, Dennis; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Stanley Beaton (Michelin); sister, Monica Beaton (John Dan).

She was predeceased by son, Donald; seven brothers; three sisters.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Central Inverness Palliative Care Society.
