Funeral service for the late Mary Agnes Grant, 88, James River, was held September 3 in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph’s, Antigonish County, with Father Lazarus Guria officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Grant died August 26, 2018, in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home. Readers at the funeral Mass were Patricia Lambert, Janet Grant and Heather MacDonald. Craig and Tristan Grant presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Margaret MacGregor MacDonald, fiddler John Pellerin and bagpiper Scott Williams. Pallbearers were Michael Bennett, Johnathan Gillis, Erin Atkinson, Stephanie Selinger, Craig Grant and Tristan Grant. Born October 28, 1929, in Antigonish, she was raised by her grandparents, the late Angus and Agnes MacMillan, Hawthorne Street. She attended school at Mount St. Bernard, where she demonstrated a talent for the craft of pottery. As a young woman, she worked at Leo’s Corner Store in Antigonish. She married Harold Grant on November 21, 1955 and settled in James River in a home he built for her, where they raised their five children. She devoted her life to being a wife and mother. She enjoyed rocking and singing to her children and grandchildren in her wooden rocking chair, baking cinnamon rolls, biscuits, marble cakes, ground-beef casserole and Christmas potato dressing, each made from her own special recipe. She loved to play pranks and was always open to lending a helping hand. In earlier years, she was an active volunteer for the St. Joseph’s CWL, working at church picnics. Later in life, she enjoyed bingo nights with her husband and their bingo friends. She looked forward to assisting her husband with his annual harvest of their Christmas trees. She is survived by two sons, Hector (Debbie), Cloverville; Leslie (Janet) Grant, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Heather MacDonald, Calgary, Alberta; Margie (Billy) Gillis, Fort McMurray, Alta.; 17 grandchildren, Craig, Tristan and Brendan Grant; Mary Patricia (Aaron) Lambert, Russell P. (Jodie) MacDonald, Stephanie (Shane) Selinger, Erin (Aaron) Atkinson, Maranda (Alex) Key, Maggie Grant (Nick), Michael (Jenn) Bennett, Christopher Bennett, Courtney (Cory) MacSween, Kylie and Johnathan Gillis, Ryan Baker, Sara and Devin Hartman; 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Harold; daughter, Helen Grant-Baker; grandparents, Angus and Agnes MacMillan; parents-in-law, Leslie and Margaret Grant; close aunts and uncles.
