Lillian Agnes Marie (Edge) Yelvington

Lillian Agnes Marie Yelvington, age 80, passed away peacefully November 29, 2018 in Halifax. She was born in Englishtown, Cape Breton in 1938, the eldest daughter of Roger and Alice (Carmichael) Edge. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Yelvington and her parents. Lillian graduated from Baddeck Rural High School and Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing with her RN in 1961. She graduated with a BSc in Nursing from College of Boca Raton, Florida. She loved nursing and received an award for Best Bedside Nursing Manner at her graduation. Lillian had an interesting and varied nursing career. One of her career highlights was the time she spent working as a private nurse to Mrs. Elsie Grosvenor (daughter of Alexander Graham Bell) at Beinn Bhreagh, Cape Breton, Washington, DC. and Florida. She loved the southern United States and made it her permanent home. She worked in administrative nursing positions at Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital (Atlanta, Georgia) where she was the Charge Nurse over all intensive care units and charity wards; Head Nurse and Supervision Training and Shift Supervisor. Lillian was also a travelling nurse with the University of Alabama, St. Margaret’s Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama and the Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. She retired from Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she was the Senior Nurse responsible for a large Telemetry Unit. She worked in all medical and surgical areas of the hospital, including the Intensive Care Unit. She is survived by daughter, Sandra Bain, Saint John, NB; sisters, Carol (Webster) Creaser, Halifax and Dolly Ann (David) Dickie, Charlottetown and brothers, Roger (Elizabeth), Halifax and Nelson (Janette), Englishtown as well as nieces and nephews Stephanie (Chris), Steven (Sarah), Chad (Sharon), Shelley Lynn (Michael), Heather (Nick), Roger and Jenni (Simon) and seven grandnieces and grandnephews, Alissa, Jessica, Logan, Duncan, Reagan, Alex and Eric. Lillian was devoted to her family and always enjoyed a yearly visit to Cape Breton. After retirement, she spent many happy days with friends and family both in Florida and Nova Scotia, moving to Halifax in 2017. A special thank you to the staff of Northwood Ivany Place, Bedford for their loving care and compassion. Memorial service will take place in Cape Breton at a later date.
