It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Kathleen (Kay) Thorne, also known as “Nana Kay Kay” of Sydney age 66, on Monday November 19, 2018 at home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Kay was born in Glace Bay, on June 25, 1952. She was the daughter of the late James and Alice Carey. Kay is survived by the love of her life, Kenny MacDonald; brothers, Wayne (Cathy), Walter (Janette), Tom (Darlene), Freddy (Debbie), Gar (Diane); sisters, Doreen (Dougie), Val, Gwen, Margie (Martin); special friends; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, and one great great niece. Kay was pre-deceased by her father, James; mother, Alice; brother, Joey; sister, Mary and brother-in-law, David Wiffen. Kay spent her years working as a housekeeper, a career she truly enjoyed. She loved to camp, play cards and make people laugh. She was a strong positive woman who accepted everyone for who they were. She genuinely enjoyed having a good time, and everyone was welcome, her door was always open. The family would like to thank Dr. Murphy, the Palliative Care Unit, VON, the Cancer Centre, and Linda Murphy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Burial will take place 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 23rd at St. Joseph’s Cemetery (Little Bras d’Or) with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will follow at the Bras d’Or Hall. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Palliative Care. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www. vjmcgillivray.ca.
