Katherine Jeanette Ann ‘Kaye’ MacNeil

Funeral service for the late Katherine Jeanette Ann ‘Kaye’ MacNeil, 82, Harbour Centre, Antigonish County, formerly of Laggan, Pictou County, was held September 20 in St. James United Church, Antigonish, with Reverend Peter Smith officiating. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Lakevale. Mrs. MacNeil died September 17, 2018, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Readers at the funeral service were Jennifer MacNeil and Sharon MacDonald. Music was provided by John Pellerin. Active pallbearers were nieces and nephews Shara MacFarlane, Cordis MacDonald, Cher MacInnes, Chet Chishom, Kyle Lesko and Joe MacNeil. Honorary pallbearers were sisters and brother-in-law, Velma Hebb, Sharon MacDonald, Lenore Grant, Doreen Chisholm, Carroll MacPherson, Joanne Pushie, Frances MacNeil and Ronnie MacNeil. Born April 25, 1936, in Laggan, she was the daughter of the late Tupper and Emma (Cavanagh) Sutherland. After her high school graduation, she received her teaching certificate at Normal School in Truro and started her teaching career at the age of 18 in a one room school house in Laggan. She married Lawrence MacNeil in 1961 and they raised four children together. She continued a long and rewarding teaching career at St. Ninian Street School and Morrison School in Antigonish. She enjoyed knitting for loved ones, reading and going to yard sales. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Ralph (Cathy) MacNeil, Douglas MacNeil, both of Antigonish; two daughters, Velma (Willie) VanderLinden, Ann (Bill) MacFarlane, both of Antigonish; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Mark, Katie and Kendra MacNeil; Sarah VanderLinden; Frank, Mary, Lilly and Duncan MacFarlane; many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; brother, Ralph Sutherland. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Martha’s Hospital Foundation.
