John D. Ray

Funeral service for the late John D. Ray, 92, Yarmouth Port, was held November 12 in Holy Rosary Church, Ballantyne’s Cove, Antigonish County, with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mr. Ray died November 2, 2018, at Liberty Commons, Chatham, Massachusetts. Reader at the funeral Mass was Darlyne Proctor. Katy Sheridan and Sally Verzone presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Ty Wallace. Urn bearer was Ken Ray. Honorary pallbearers were Ann MacPherson, Gerard MacEachern, Jackie MacEachern, Daniel MacEachern, Jeff Verzone, Patrick Sheridan, Cecilia Grant, Richard Grant and members of Arras Branch 59 Royal Canadian Legion. Born in Lowell, Mass., and raised in Arlington, he joined the US Navy during the Second World War. In keeping with the many who were discharged from the service at that time, he attended Boston University utilizing the GI Bill. While attending BU, he also played hockey for the BU Terriers. At the time of his graduation, he received a notice from the Navy that he was being re-called to serve another year during the Korean Conflict. Ice hockey was his passion. He played and managed the Arlington Arcadians, a team part of a very active league during the1950s. His business career was spent in the insurance industry in the Boston and New Jersey area. His retirement years were spent in Yarmouth Port, St. Augustine, Florida, and Cape George, Antigonish County. He is survived by his wife, Mary Teresa (MacEachern) Ray; brother, Kenneth Ray, Lowell, Mass.; and his long-time friend, Enrica Casali; four sisters-in-law, Eva Kessler, Johnston, Pennsylvania; Ann MacPherson, Cecilia Grant, Betty Farrell, all of Antigonish; three brothers-in-law, John MacEachern, Gerard MacEachern and Daniel MacEachern, Cape George; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, George William; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Ray, Lorine MacEachern; brother-in-law, Ronald MacEachern.
