New Glasgow - Jean Isabel Stensrud, died peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital on October 12, 2018 in her eighty-ninth year. She was born in New Glasgow on November 27, 1929, the eldest child of the late Arthur and Marion (Gordon) Crowe. She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace Stensrud and brother, Russell Crowe. She is survived by her children, Karl (Diane), Truro; Lynn (Hugh) MacDonald, Mississauga, ON; Karen, New Glasgow; Douglas (Jaye Ouellette), McArras Brook; Gordon (Cheryl), Eureka; and her grandsons, Grant MacDonald, Taylor and Carson Stensrud. She is also survived by her sister, Sharon (Kenneth) Barkhouse, Pictou; brother, Douglas Crowe, Surrey, BC; and sister-in-law, Shirley Crowe, Pictou. Jean grew up and attended school in Pictou. Following a year in Brantford, Ontario, she returned to Nova Scotia and she was employed with Maritime Tel & Tel in Halifax, as a switchboard operator. She was married in 1952 and eventually she and Wally returned to New Glasgow to raise their family. Following Wally’s death in 1982, Jean fulfilled a lifelong dream and returned to school. She received a Bachelor of Arts with Major (English literature) from St Francis Xavier University in 1995. Jean served two terms as President of the Aberdeen Hospital Auxiliary and was awarded a Life Membership of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Auxiliaries for valued and continued service. She was also a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Ladies Auxiliary. Jean was an avid duplicate bridge player, a voracious reader of British mysteries and a frustrated Blue Jays fan. Visitation will be held at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow on Tuesday, October 16 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, on Wednesday, October 17 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Joon Ki Kim officiating. Interment at Lorne Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Jean’s memory be made to the St. Andrews Memorial Fund, Aberdeen Health Foundation or a charity of your choice.
