Janet Anne Campbell

CAMPBELL, Janet Anne Janet Anne Campbell, age 54, of Waverley, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2019 in the Halifax Infirmary, QE II. She lived graciously and courageously with cancer for the last year and a half. Janet was a long-time resident of Waverley, although she loved to spend time in her true home, Cape Breton. ‘Mama J’, as she was affectionately known by many, was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul Coleman. Janet is survived by her parents, John and Anne Marie Campbell (Sydney); her daughters, Sarah Coleman, Michelle Coleman, Lisa Coleman and Anna Coleman, Waverley; her siblings, Patricia (Paul) Campbell, Karen (Charlie Morrison) Campbell, Sydney, Susan (Andy Legere) Campbell, Waverley and Christopher (Christine Fancy) Campbell, Grand Pre, and her husband’s siblings, Charlie (Kathy) Coleman, Fran (Lloyd) Foster, Doug (Susan) Coleman, Susan (Michael) Sampson, Kathleen Coleman, Halifax, Rick Coleman, Sydney. Janet is also survived by 29 nieces and nephews, all of whom were her favourite. She will be missed by her three furry kids, Shea, Olive and Luna. Janet grew up in Mira Road, Sydney, NS and loved spending summers at her family’s bungalow on the Mira. Janet was blessed to have an amazing group of childhood friends with whom she continued a lifelong relationship. She held degrees from Saint Francis Xavier University (BSc), Saint Mary’s University (BEd) and Mount Saint Vincent University (MEd). She carried her value for education into her teaching career. Janet recognized the unique ability in everyone and spent most of her time as a teacher specializing in resource at Harold T. Barrett Junior High, Lockview High School and Waverley Memorial Elementary School. Janet described herself well in her own Twitter bio, “Mother, sister, teacher, daughter, knitter, runner, wood burner, clothesline lover, and closet mathematician”. She loved to spend her free time (albeit not much) sitting by her fireplace, drinking green tea and working on her latest knitting project. Janet will be remembered for her independence and resilience which she instilled in each of her daughters. Ahead of her time, Janet was passionate about social justice, equality, and protecting the environment. Janet was very involved with her parish, Saint Rose of Lima (Fall River). She used her faith to see the good in others and life as a whole. She volunteered in many ways for the parish, and Janet’s passion for education was seen again in her role as Catechism teacher. Above all, Janet valued family. Janet was an integral part of both the Campbell and Coleman families and her legacy will continue in actions of kindness and compassion. The door of her log home was always open to family members and it was often the venue for the famous 30+ person family party. “Pizza night” on Fridays at Janet’s house was a long-standing tradition. She would make pizza from scratch for her daughters, siblings, nieces, nephews and family friends. Janet and Paul loved their four daughters more than anything. They could often be seen out for family walks and bike rides. Her daughters have fond memories of the care and effort that was put into March Break activities and numerous birthday parties. Starting from their humble beginnings with a tent trailer, the family travelled the Maritimes, upgrading to a hard-top tent trailer and finally a travel trailer. The travel trailer found its permanent home in Pipers’ Cove, and as Janet’s family grew, summers on the Mira turned into summers at “The Cove”. This magical corner of the Bras d’Or Lake was particularly dear to her and will become her final resting place. In this time of sadness, Janet would want you to reflect on this advice she gave to her family, “It is not going to be the same, but it will always be good”. Visitation to be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, August 18 in Atlantic Funeral Homes, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral Mass 11 a.m., August 19 in St. Rose of Lima, 9 Jamieson Dr., Fall River.
