Helmut Otto Schmidt

Funeral service for the late Helmut Otto Schmidt was held August 3 in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating.

Mr. Schmidt died July 31, 2019, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.

Readers at the funeral Mass were Jordan Schmidt, Cate Marjeram, Zach LeBlanc, Seb LeBlanc and Luke Marjeram. Maelle LeBlanc, Sheila Smith and Maura Lee Murray presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Emery Van de Wiel.

Pallbearers were François LeBlanc, Zachary LeBlanc, Sébastien LeBlanc, James Marjeram, Luke Marjeram and Jordan Schmidt.

Born January 7th, 1941, in Vienna, Austria, he was a son of the late Maria and Otto Schmidt. He earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design. Expo ‘67 brought him to Montreal as part of the Austrian Delegation, where he met, his wife Frances, and subsequently made Canada his home. Trilingual, he enjoyed a productive career as a designer in both Quebec and Ontario, eventually becoming an entrepreneur in his own right. He enjoyed hiking Mount Owl’s Head in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and skiing the Alps of his homeland.

He is survived by two daughters, Karina LeBlanc (François), Sandra Schmidt (James Marjeram); six grandchildren, Jordan (Morgan Bews) Zachary, Sébastien, Luke, Cate, Maëlle; sister, Lilo Judmayr (Hubert); several siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Kiely); two sisters, Inge Schmidt, Gertrude Mayer.

Memorial donations may be made to Fredericton Homeless Shelters Inc. or St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.
