Harlan Dewitt MacLeod

Funeral service for the late Harlan Dewitt MacLeod, 79, Addington Forks, Antigonish County, was held April 13 in St. James United Church, with Reverend Peter Smith officiating. Burial will be in St. Ninian Cemetery at a later date. Mr. MacLeod died April 9, 2019, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Readers at the funeral service were Reta MacLeod and Claire Brunelle. Music was provided by organist Hee-Jung Choi and St. James church choir. Active pallbearers were Danny Connors, Gordie Burns, Ronnie Smith, Frank Cormier, Paul Tomlik and Allan Boyd. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Antigonish Lions Club. Born in Middleton, he was a son of the late Alexander Dewitt and Elizabeth (Cameron) MacLeod. He began his working career with his cousin at MacLeod Funeral Home in River John. He moved to Antigonish in 1964, as manager of Maple Leaf Mills on College Street. He went on to become owner/operator of MacLeod’s Feed and Farm Supplies Ltd in Antigonish. After the business changed hands, he continued to work for Shur-Gain/Maple Leaf Foods until his retirement in 2000. Always interested in agriculture, he raised turkeys and chickens, continued to sell fertilizer throughout Eastern Nova Scotia for Cavendish Agriculture Services and went back to being involved in the funeral business. He was always ready to lend a helping hand at C.L. Curry Funeral Home. He was a dedicated and tireless worker for his church and community. He was an active member of St. James United Church Men’s Club, a life member of the Antigonish Lion’s Club and recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for outstanding Lion achievement. He was involved with the Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition and Northeastern Christmas Tree Association. He had a bountiful garden each year, and played regularly in both curling and bowling leagues. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Kell); son, Jason (Tracy), Addington Forks; granddaughter, Alissa, Brampton, Ontario; sister, Eileen Matheson, Truro. He was predeceased by brother, Aulden (Shirley); sister, Lorraine (Sylvan) Mingo; brother-in-law, George Matheson. Memorial donations may be made to N. S.
