ACKER, Gladys Alberta (Locke) Gladys Alberta (Locke) Acker, 87, Bay Side Home, formerly of Birchtown, Shelburne, passed away with her family by her side, in the early hours of the morning, October 5, 2019, one month short of her 88th birthday. Born November 22, 1931 in Shelburne, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Laura (MacLean) Locke. As a young girl she worked at The Morris Chocolate Factory in Dartmouth and Roseway Hospital. She worked in many family homes during illness or the birth of a new baby. Mom loved her community and the people in it. She was a very caring, compassionate person and loved to give back to her community. She was the first one to help when needed. She loved to clean and was a great cook. She won many prizes for her baked items and her white cake was always a first prize at the Shelburne County Ex. No one ever went away hungry from her home. Mom loved talking with her friends and family on the phone, especially late night calls with her friend Marjorie. She always provided prayer, love and encouragement to everyone! Her greatest love and life’s work was God and her family. Her family were blessed to have such a special Mother. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved having them around. She is survived by her loving children, Darrell Acker, Birchtown, Carole (George) Davis, Barrie, Ontario, Irene (Billy) Baker, Clark's Harbour and Rose Miller (Thelbert), Newellton. Also surviving are grandchildren, Murray (Rhonda), Laura (Cory), Katie (Josh) and Bill (Jillian); great-grandchildren, Ethan, Eric, Alex, Christopher, Willow and Harrison; special Nanny Acker to great-nephew, Sheldon and niece, Skyla; siblings, Mildred Starling (Barry) and Curtis Locke, both of Ontario; special family members, sister in-law and brother in-law, Doreen (James) Myers, and brother-in-law, Evan Crowe, as well as many loved nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Whitman; brothers, Alvin, Mervin and Austin (Austin in infancy); sisters, Elvie Smyth, Kathleen Kirkey and Alma Wilson, and half-sister, Josie Bower; special sister-in-law, Marie Acker Crowe. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Homes & Crematorium Ltd. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 18, from 7-9 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Debi Hill officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Mizpah Cemetery, Birchtown, Bayside Home Van Fund, VON and Home Care, Barrington and Shelburne area or a charity of your choice.
