It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Gerard Edward Kennedy, age 54, on February 4, 2019. Born in Toronto, Ont. on May 27, 1964, and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, he was the eldest son of Donna (Chisholm) Kennedy and the late E. Gerard Kennedy. After graduation from Sydney Academy, Gerard attended UCCB from which he received a pre-engineering diploma following which he attended TUNS Halifax, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Civil). Gerard was then employed with SNC Lavalin Engineering, Halifax as a structural engineer. He then accepted a position with the Department of Transportation (N.S.) as Resident Engineer in the New Glasgow Region and eventually the Sydney Region. In 2005 Gerard and his family moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he was Manager of Municipal Engineering Northern Alberta with GENIVAR Canada. in 2008 he moved to EBA /Tetra Tech Canada where he occupied the position of Senior Vice President Transportation at the time of his death. Gerard was the author of many professional papers and a member of a number of professional engineering societies including The Center for Transportation and Planning (C-TEP) where he served as the president from2013-2015. In addition to his formal education in engineering, Gerard attended the University of Alberta and Ivey Business School at Western University. Gerard was a dedicated athlete involved in many sports especially Volleyball where he participated at the high school and university levels competing at the national level. Gerard is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 24 years, Sherry (Reashore) Kennedy; the lights of his life, his daughter, Jennifer and son, Michael (Sherwood Park, AB). He is also survived by his sister, Kathy (Brad Mills) Kennedy, Sydney; his brother, Edmund (Jenna) Kennedy, Yarmouth, NS; his uncles, Allan Kennedy and Donald Chisholm, of Sydney, NS. and his beloved nieces and nephews, Sherene (Chris Drover) Kennedy Halifax, NS and Mitchell (Lise) Kennedy, Edmonton, AB; Ryan Kennedy and Vivian Kennedy, Yarmouth. Cremation has taken place under the care of Park Place Funeral Home, Sherwood Park, AB. A Funeral Mass took place on Monday, February 11, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Interment will be in Sydney at a later date. .
