Fabian Gregory Smith

Fabian Gregory Smith, 87, a longtime resident of Sydney, passed away suddenly on April 9, 2019. Born in Sydney on February 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Charles and Anna (McPhee) Smith. Fabian was a loving and caring husband and father. He was a graduate of Sydney Academy and worked at the Sysco General Office for over 40 years and was active in sports and volunteer organizations for his entire life. He was a season ticket holder for the CB Oilers and Screaming Eagles for many years. In his early life he held various positions in the Cape Breton Hockey Referees Association, various CB junior and senior hockey leagues, Sydney & District Little League. As a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, he served three terms on St. Joseph Parish Council, 7 years on Central Board for Family Services of Eastern Nova Scotia, many years on the Board of Directors for the Steele Centre Credit Union including a term as Board Chairman. Fabian joined the Kinsman Club of Sydney in 1967 winning various awards and was named Life Member in 1979. He was the founder of the Kinsmen Hockey Heritage Hall of Fame located in Centre 200. He served two terms on Sydney City Council including being appointed chairman of the Recreation Commission, chairman of the Board of Health and member of the Centre 200 Commission. Fabian was appointed Deputy Mayor in 1987. After retirement, he joined Kiwanis Club of CB Golden K where he was an active member until his passing and served as president and 2 terms on the Board of Directors. He was awarded the Mel Osborne Fellowship. Fabian was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Lydia (Black) and his brother, Lorne from Howie Centre. He is survived by four sons, Clayton (Karen) Brooklyn Queens Co., Gregory (Yanny) Vancouver, Stephen (LeeAnn) Antigonish, and David (Jane) Sydney River; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan Neilson) Lower Sackville; Darren, Halifax and special friend, Valerie Anderson. Visitation will take place from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday April 15th at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church on Tuesday April 16th at 11 a.m. with Fr. Bill Burke officiating.
