Funeral service for the late Edward Burton ‘Ed’ Murrin, 88, Antigonish, was held February 13 in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, with Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial was in St. Ninian Cemetery. Mr. Murrin died February 8, 2019, at home. Readers at the funeral Mass were son-in-law Jim Murray and granddaughters Amy O’Toole and Erin Murrin. Granddaughters Stephanie Young, Amy O’Toole and Erin Murrin presented the offertory gifts. Music was provided by Emery Van de Wiel. Pallbearers were grandchildren Brad Doyle, Ryan Murray, Chris Murray, Kiely Hall, Lyndon Murrin and Beth Murray. Born December 15, 1930, in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of Dan and Bessie (MacDonald) Murrin. He was educated at St. Anthony’s and St. Anne’s High School, followed by St. F.X. University, where he played hockey with the X-Men of the early 1950s. He was proud to be inducted, along with his teammates, into the St.F.X. Sports Hall of Fame, and the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. He was active in many other sports, such as swimming, golfing, volleyball, sailing and baseball, both playing and coaching. After receiving his B.Ed., he embarked on a 35 year teaching and administration career. He served as president of both the Nova Scotia Math Teachers Association and the Nova Scotia School Administrators Association. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Kiely); son, Marty (Paula), Antigonish; four daughters, Anne Marie (Peter Robson) McLean, Pender Island, British Columbia; Marguerite (Tom) Cahill, Ancaster, Ontario; Maura Lee (Jim) Murray, Antigonish; Sheila Smith, Calgary, Alberta; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Murrin, North Sydney; 14 grandchildren, Amy (Matt), Allison (Mike), Kiely, Brad (Jessica), Mark (Christine), Ryan (Izzy), Chris (Erin), Stephanie (Nick), Beth, Erin, Lyndon, Sean, James, Matthew, nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Gerald (Sis), Eric (Jeannette), Vernon (Lois), Dan (Rose); sister, Dorita; sister-in-law, Heather; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
