CHANT, William ‘Calder’ November 3, 1928 October 2, 2019 Calder, age 90, of Glace Bay passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on October 2, 2019. Calder fought a long and courageous battle with bladder cancer. Born in Glace Bay, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, he was the son of the late Christy Ann and Herb Chant. Dad lived most of his life in Glace Bay before moving to Sydney 28 years ago to 312 Esplanade Street and most recently, Rideout House Assisted Living. Dad worked for Thompson & Sutherland, Chappells Building Supplies and later Briand's Cab Company. Dad was a member of Epworth United Church and most recently, St. Andrew's United Church where he was involved in the men's club serving as president. Dad would greet you with a smile and loved to laugh and talk about old times. He was involved in sports in his younger years including curling, bowling, and baseball. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan which was clear to see by the memorabilia that filled the walls in his apartment. One of Dad's favourite and most noted sayings was "This is the year". Aside from the Leafs, Dad enjoyed a good roast beef dinner, scratch tickets, pull tabs, and music. Dad is survived by his son, Gary (Lori); daughter, Pam; grandchildren, Jill, Nicole (Ewen), Kim (Anthony), Jennifer (Terry), John James, Justin, Laura Lee, and Brian; great-grandchildren, Danica, and Blakely. He is also survived by his special friend, Lorraine Barnaby, who he truly adored. Dad is also survived by his great friends and neighbours for several years, Harvey Dupe and Earl MacVicar. Calder was predeceased by his wife, Carol (Phillips); daughter, Marlene; son, Brian; and siblings, Marge, Stan, Herb, Mabel Campbell, and Effie MacMullin. We would like to thank his long-time Doctor, Dr. John Archibald. Special thanks to Dr. Ron MacCormick, Dr. Asim, staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Center, and nursing staff on 4A and 4D.
