PENNEY, Anastasia ‘Nellie’ It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, sister, Anastasia ‘Nellie’ Penney, age 85, on October 5, 2019, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney River, NS. Mom passed peacefully with many of her family at her side. She was born on July 26, 1934 and was the daughter of the late Wasyl ‘William’ and Mary (Yurchesyn) Furdas. Nellie met the love of her life Clif, they enjoyed dancing together, beach days and going to Polar Bear. They married and raised their family in Sydney. Mom worked for many years as an accounting clerk for the Dept of Transportation. Family was everything to mom and after raising her children, her life revolved around being ‘Baba’ to her nine grandchildren, cherishing each one for their uniqueness and making them all feel so special. Mom was an avid gardener and a great crafts woman. She loved to sew, knit and crochet. Each winter, there would be new mittens, knit with love, for each grandchild. Mom would always welcome you into her home, be it in Sydney, or at the “bungalow” in Irish Vale with dad by her side. Nellie is survived by her children, Glenn (Nancy) Penney, Moncton, NB, Denise MacKenzie, Sydney, and Laura (John) Scott, Halifax, NS and her grandchildren, Chris (Michelle), Charlene (Yasha), Michelle (Dan), Lory, Jillian, Kaitlin, Madison, Ainslye and Jared. Also left to mourn her are her sisters, Katherine ‘Kay’ Dilney, Ruby Antle, Marie (Karl) Halloran, Natalie (Vince) MacLean and brothers, John Furdas, Michael (Sharon) Furdas and Walter (Lauren) Furdas, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Clifton Penney, brothers Joseph Furdas, Gordon (in infancy) and sister Anne Veinotte. Her family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Fisherman’s Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, for their many years of support and care. We are forever grateful to Shannon and Doreen for your kindness in caring for our mom. You are all truly wonderful caregivers and bring love and dignity to our elders in their final stages of life. There will be no visitation. A funeral will be held at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday October 9, 2019 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Bill Burke presiding. Donations can be made to Loaves and Fishes or to a charity of your choice and words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.twcurry.com Laugh and cry for the ones gone, for they will send angels to watch over you until you see them again.
